SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son Announces $100 Billion Investment in US
SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, the founder of the Japanese tech-investing firm, announced a $100 billion investment in the United States over the next four years during a visit to President-elect Donald Trump’s residence at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. The investment will be focused on artificial intelligence and related infrastructure, with the goal of creating 100,000 jobs.
Son stated, “My confidence level to the economy of the United States has tremendously increased with his victory. President Trump is a double down president. I’m going to have to double down.” This investment is an increase from the $50 billion investment announced in 2016, which aimed to create 50,000 jobs.
The funding could come from various sources controlled by SoftBank, including the Vision Fund, capital projects or chipmaker Arm Holdings, where the firm is majority owner. The funding will not only come from newly raised money, but also include some funding already announced, such as the $1.5 billion investment in OpenAI, the tech firm behind chatbot ChatGPT.
