Agatha All Along Showrunner Explains Why Alice Wu-Gulliver Had to Die
Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer has explained why Alice Wu-Gulliver, played by Ali Ahn, had to die in the Disney+ series. Alice’s death in episode 5 of the show was a shocking moment for fans, as she had just learned to embrace her power and overcome a family curse.
In an interview with Empire, Schaeffer revealed that she regretted killing off Alice, but understood that it was necessary to advance the story. “It is really sad, and it feels unfair,” she said. “I know that’s been the reaction of viewers, and I understand that, and sort of feel it myself. But it’s a show about death. It was an imperative to take that seriously, and feel both the beauty and sadness of it.”
Schaeffer explained that Alice’s death was meant to embody the ruthless nature of the Witches’ Road, and that it was important for the character to articulate the audience’s feelings of unfairness. “I wanted Alice to articulate what the audience is feeling – This isn’t fair. But she did die a hero,” she said.
Alice’s death was a poignant moment in the show, as she had become a fan favorite character. However, her sacrifice was a necessary part of the story, and served to drive home the stakes of the Witches’ Road journey.
