Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts Speaks at Fan Fest
At the Dodgers’ annual fan fest, manager Dave Roberts gave updates on the team’s upcoming season. When asked about pitcher Shohei Ohtani’s availability, Roberts said that pitching for the team in May would be “about right.” Ohtani had surgery on his left shoulder in November and is expected to return to the mound, but has not pinpointed a specific date.
Ohtani, who has been working out every day, said he is on schedule to start spring training and the season, but will know more about his return after his first bullpen session. He also reiterated that he will not pitch in the season-opening Japan Series against the Chicago Cubs on March 18-19 in Tokyo.
First baseman Freddie Freeman, who had ankle surgery in December, started hitting again this week. He has yet to be cleared to start running and does not expect to play in early spring training games. However, he is on track to play in the Japan Series.
Pitcher Clayton Kershaw has begun a throwing progression and is working on finalizing a contract with the team for the upcoming season. He had foot and knee surgeries in November and his season ended early due to a left big toe injury.
The team is also considering re-signing utilityman Kiké Hernández, with general manager Brandon Gomes saying that they have never closed the door to bringing him back.
Roberts himself is heading into the final year of his contract and the team is discussing an extension with him. He has led the Dodgers to four NL pennants and two World Series titles during his tenure as manager.
