Shamsub Din Jabbar named as suspect in New Orleans New Year’s attack.

Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 50-year-old U.S.-born citizen from Texas, has been identified as the suspect who allegedly drove into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens.

Jabbar, who died at the scene of the attack, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a Human Resource Specialist and Information Technology Specialist from 2007 to 2015, and later in the Army Reserves until 2020. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 and was awarded various medals for his service.

According to the FBI, Jabbar’s marriages ended in 2012 and 2022, and he shared two children with his second wife. He missed child support payments to their children.

Jabbar also had a prior attempt to join the Navy in 2004, but was discharged before serving. He had a minor criminal record, with charges of theft in 2002 and driving with an invalid license in 2005.

The suspect had an active voting registration in Texas and previously resided in North Carolina, where he was registered as a Democrat.

The attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism, and officials have postponed the Sugar Bowl in the wake of the incident.
