Senator Mike Lee presses for TSA abolition.

Sen. Mike Lee Continues to Call for Abolition of TSA

Sen. Mike Lee is still advocating for the abolition of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), citing its invasive and unwarranted security procedures. The Utah Republican took to social media to express his discontent with the agency, urging followers to abolish it and claiming that airlines would do a better job of securing their own planes.

Lee recently posted on social media, saying, “Tired of being groped every time you travel? Abolish TSA. Make Airport Security Free Of Sexual Assault Again.” He also tweeted, “Chairman Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, speaks during the Senate Energy and Natural Resources confirmation hearing for U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Energy Chris Wright on Capitol Hill on Jan. 15, 2025, in Washington, D.C.”

Lee suggested that instead of the TSA, airlines could handle passenger screening. He pointed out that the agency’s website mentions that passengers may be required to undergo a pat-down procedure as part of its security measures.

The TSA was established in 2001 following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It is responsible for securing the country’s airports and preventing terrorist activity. However, Lee believes that the agency is not doing an effective job, citing its invasive procedures and the lack of accountability.

Lee’s call to abolish the TSA is not a new idea. He advocated for the same thing last year, saying that airlines could and would do a better job of securing their own planes if a federal agency didn’t do it for them. He also shared a video of a man being subjected to a pat-down, saying it was unsettling and that the TSA conducts needlessly invasive searches on law-abiding Americans.

Despite his efforts to abolish the TSA, Lee recently experienced a TSA pat-down himself. He took to social media to share his experience, saying that it was slow and thorough and that he couldn’t help but wonder if it was a coincidence or part of the problem with having a federal agency in charge of airport security.
