Democrat Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii faced ridicule on social media for her opening questions to Interior Secretary nominee Doug Burgum during his confirmation hearing. As part of her responsibilities to ensure the fitness of nominees, Hirono asked Burgum if he had ever made unwanted requests for sexual favors or committed any verbal or physical harassment or assault of a sexual nature since becoming a legal adult, and if he had ever faced discipline or entered into a settlement related to this kind of conduct.
Burgum responded “no” to both questions. However, conservatives on social media panned Hirono’s line of questioning, with some calling her “bat guano crazy” and suggesting that she is “obsessed” with sex. Others questioned how Hirono was able to hold seats on the Judiciary, Armed Services, and Energy committees, suggesting that she must have some sort of compromising information on a member of Democratic leadership.
Conservative commentators and social media personalities, including Chad Prather, Benny Johnson, Ned Ryun, Tiana Lowe Doescher, Tim Young, and Henry Rogers, all criticized Hirono’s questions, with some implying that she was trying to deflect attention away from her own supposed misdeeds. The Daily Caller’s chief national correspondent, Henry Rogers, described Hirono as “deranged.” Hirono’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
