SENATOR: Hegseth FBI Report Omitted Key Info on Russian Collusion
Senator Rep. Devin Nunes, the Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, charged on Wednesday that a recent FBI report on the Russia probe, led by FBI official Peter Strzok, left out crucial information and was incomplete.
During a hearing, Nunes blasted the report for failing to provide essential details on key decisions made by Department of Justice (DOJ) officials during the Russia probe, including the decision to open an investigation into the 2016 presidential election.
Nunes claimed that the report was missing crucial evidence, including information on the use of unconfirmed sources by the FBI, the role of the White House in the investigation, and the possible bias of certain officials involved in the probe.
“It’s a very incomplete report, [and] it’s not a very transparent report,” said Nunes. “We’re still waiting for answers on many questions, and we’re still waiting for the FBI to produce the documents we have requested.”
Nunes has been a vocal critic of the Russia probe, and has repeatedly accused the FBI of being biased and overstepping its authority. He has also been a key proponent of the notion that the Russian probe was an overt attempt to destabilize the 2016 presidential election.
The report in question was published in December and covered the period from May 2016 to September 2017, the period when the FBI first began to investigate alleged Russian interference in the election. The report sought to provide a comprehensive account of the investigation, including the development of the Trump-Russia collusion theory and the FBI’s subsequent actions to undermine the Trump campaign.
However, Nunes and other Republican lawmakers have been critical of the report, saying that it was heavily redacted and only provided a superficial account of the investigation without revealing crucial details.
