Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin announced his intention to vote in favor of the confirmation of Senator Marco Rubio to serve as the next Secretary of State. Durbin praised Rubio’s experience and views on foreign policy, citing their shared perspectives and work together on legislative efforts regarding human rights, China, and the recent Venezuelan election.
Durbin highlighted Rubio’s understanding of the United States’ role on the international stage, as well as his experience serving on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He also acknowledged Rubio’s “honor” in serving in the Senate and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the State Department.
The nomination is expected to sail through on a bipartisan basis, with Senator John Fetterman previously calling Rubio “a strong choice” and indicating his support for confirmation. The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations is set to hold a nomination hearing for Rubio on Wednesday.
