Social Media Videos Show Syrian Rebels Toppling Statues of Assad Family Members in Aleppo
Videos circulating on social media show people in Aleppo, Syria, bringing down the statue of Bassel al-Assad, the deceased brother of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the bust of Hafez al-Assad, Bashar’s late father and predecessor. The events took place as Syrian opposition forces seized control of much of the country’s second-largest city, Aleppo. This marks the first time Syrian rebels have set foot in Aleppo since government forces regained control during the civil war in 2016. The rebel alliance launched a surprise attack, reigniting a conflict that had been mostly static for years.
