Newly Confirmed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Lays Out Foreign Policy Agenda
In a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlined his department’s new focus on developing America’s relationships with its immediate neighbors in the western hemisphere. Rubio, former senator from Florida, stated that US diplomats have “neglected” their relationships with western hemisphere nations, prioritizing those on the opposite side of the world instead. This approach has led to problems, missed opportunities, and neglected partners, which will come to an end.
Rubio emphasized that the new approach will focus on settling disputes and building relationships with nearby countries, particularly as the US seeks to implement stronger border controls. He also signaled that the US will focus on relocating its supply chains to the western hemisphere, as opposed to relying on “far-flung” ones that were ravaged by COVID-19. This, he believes, will clear a path for economic growth in these countries and safeguard American economic security.
The secretary also touched on the issue of mass migration, stating that it has “destabilized” the region and allowed drug cartels to poison American and Latin American communities. He expressed optimism that western hemisphere nations will be ready partners with the US to tackle these issues and make themselves more prosperous. Rubio concluded by emphasizing the importance of cooperation, stating that a “safer, stronger and more prosperous” home will benefit all nations and that together, there are few limits to what can be accomplished.
