Reaching for a Can of Coke Could Shave Minutes Off Your Life, Scientists Claim
According to a recent study conducted by the University of Michigan, reaching for certain processed foods could be shaving minutes off your life. The study found that ultra-processed foods, which contain artificial colors and flavors, preservatives, and emulsifiers, can be detrimental to health if not consumed in moderation.
The study found that consuming certain foods, such as hot dogs, could take off 36 minutes from someone’s life, while a breakfast sandwich or eggs could shave off 13 minutes, and a cheeseburger could take off nine minutes. Reaching for a can of Coke could take away 12 minutes of one’s life.
On the other hand, the study found that eating certain types of fish could add 28 more minutes to one’s life. Other healthy foods, such as fruits, healthy carbs, and vegetables, are recommended by doctors to maintain a healthy diet.
Study lead Dr. Olivier Jolliet emphasized the urgency of making dietary changes to improve health and the importance of making small, targeted changes to achieve significant health and environmental benefits.
The study’s findings back up previous research, which has linked high consumption of ultra-processed foods to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, mental health issues, and type 2 diabetes. Higher consumption of UFPs was also linked to a 21% greater risk of death, obesity, and other health conditions.
While UFPs are okay to consume in moderation, doctors recommend opting for healthier food options to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle.
