Kim Andrews, a 37-year-old San Francisco woman, pleaded not guilty to her latest charges of child endangerment and making criminal threats in connection with an alleged incident in Golden Gate Park on July 19. Andrews has been charged in four separate criminal cases over the past four years for allegedly approaching and threatening children in public spaces.
In the latest incident, Andrews allegedly approached a woman and her 18-month-old toddler along the park path and screamed, “Oh, a baby” and “You’re going to die” while holding a lighter and an aerosol can of Lysol. Andrews has been charged with one count of child endangerment and one count of making criminal threats in connection with the incident.
Andrews has been receiving psychiatric care at a hospital after her most recent arrest and has entered a mental health conservatorship. Her defense attorney, Tom McMahon, expressed concern that extended time in jail could impact Andrews’ ability to receive the care and services she needs.
San Francisco Superior Court Judge Kenneth Wine called the reports of the alleged encounters “horrific” and “extraordinarily threatening,” stating that Andrews is “a danger to the public.” Prosecutors have moved to keep Andrews detained pending trial, citing her public safety risk.
Andrews has a history of alleged incidents, including previous arrests on suspicion of battery and robbery, shoplifting, and criminal threats. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins stated that her office will do everything in its power to ensure children are safe in the city and will fight for justice in the courtroom.
