Salesforce to Hire 2,000 More Salespeople to Sell AI Software, CEO Benioff Says

Salesforce, the cloud software company, is set to hire an additional 2,000 people to sell its artificial intelligence (AI) software to clients, according to CEO Marc Benioff. This is double the number the company had previously announced, which was 1,000 salespeople.

Benioff made the announcement at a company event in San Francisco, stating that the company is already receiving 9,000 referrals for the 2,000 available positions.

The new AI-powered sales team will focus on selling the company’s second-generation Agentforce technology, which allows for the creation and operation of AI agents. The technology will become available to customers in February 2025 and will be able to handle complex questions using data from various sources.

This announcement comes after Salesforce’s decision to lay off over 7,000 employees two years ago to reflect economic conditions. As of January 31, 2024, the company’s headcount stood at 72,682, down 1% from two years earlier.

Benioff also highlighted the company’s current AI capabilities, which are already being used to help customers with their queries. He mentioned that about 5,000 out of 32,000 conversations per week are being escalated to humans, down from 10,000 before.

In comparison, Microsoft has also been developing its own AI-powered tools, including its Copilot brand. However, according to Benioff, Microsoft’s website does not currently show how it is automating customer support. Microsoft’s chief marketing officer for AI at work, Jared Spataro, stated that Copilot is helping to resolve cases 11.5% faster and driving 9.4% higher revenue per seller for its sales teams.
