New Orleans Saints owner and New Orleans Pelicans governor Gayle Benson has made a $1.25 million donation to the Greater New Orleans Foundation. The contribution, made in mid-July, has been used to support the victims of a deadly truck attack on Bourbon Street that occurred early Wednesday morning. The attack, which killed 14 people and injured dozens more, has been met with widespread shock and devastation.
Benson’s donation has been channeled into the Gayle and Tom Benson Disaster Relief Fund, which was established by the Greater New Orleans Foundation to provide vital assistance to those affected by disasters in the region. The fund, which serves the 13-parish region of metro New Orleans, was initially established in the wake of Hurricane Beryl’s devastating impact last summer.
In a statement, Benson said, “In the wake of the tragic events on Bourbon Street this New Year’s, we are fully committed to supporting the victims and their families. Through the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s disaster relief fund, we will provide vital assistance to those affected, ensuring they have the resources they need during this challenging time.”
Benson emphasized the importance of community support during difficult times, stating, “It is our collective responsibility to support our community in times of hardship. And I will continue to stand with New Orleans as we heal together.”
