Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg Announces Prostate Cancer Has Relapsed
Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg announced on Tuesday that the prostate cancer he thought had been defeated earlier this year has returned, having spread to other organs.
In an Instagram post, Sandberg wrote, “Unfortunately, we recently learned the cancer has relapsed, and it has spread to other organs. This means that I’m back to more intensive treatment. We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for me and my family.”
Sandberg, a 16-year Major League Baseball veteran, hit .285 with 282 homers, 1,061 RBIs, and 344 steals in his career. He made 10 All-Star appearances and won nine Gold Glove Awards, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
Cubs owner Tom Ricketts issued a statement, praising Sandberg as “an inspiration to cancer survivors everywhere,” and sending positive thoughts and prayers to the former slugger and his family.
Sandberg’s cancer relapse comes after he was previously treated with radiation and was declared cancer-free. He remains optimistic, saying, “We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this.”
