A wild brawl erupted at the conclusion of Saturday’s Michigan-Ohio State game in Columbus after Michigan pulled off an unexpected victory. The Wolverines attempted to plant a Michigan flag at midfield, which the Buckeyes took umbrage with and fought to stop. The confrontation escalated into violence, with police eventually resorting to pepper spray to break it up.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day defended his players’ actions, saying they would not allow an opposing team to plant a flag on their field. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore took a more conciliatory approach, acknowledging that emotions ran high on both sides and emphasizing the need for better discipline.
Michigan running back Kalel Mullins, who had a standout performance in the game, called the incident “bad for the sport” and “classless” on the part of the Buckeyes. He emphasized the importance of learning how to lose and respecting one’s opponents.
The brawl marked the fourth consecutive year that Michigan has defeated Ohio State, which had previously won 15 of 16 meetings.
