Russian Forces Suffer High Losses in 2025 as Ukraine’s Defense Ministry Reports 1,370 Casualties
Russian forces have begun 2025 with another day of high losses, according to Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. The ministry announced that over the previous day, Russia had suffered 1,370 casualties, consisting of both dead and injured personnel. This brings the total Russian losses since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022, to 792,170.
The Kremlin insists that its forces are being replenished, but high losses may be difficult for Russia to sustain due to their military and economic effects. Ukraine’s estimate of the total Russian losses in 2024 was 430,790, a significant rise from the previous year’s estimate of 253,290.
Ukraine’s commander in chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, wrote on Telegram that the enemy continues to carry out continuous assaults, suffering record losses. In the last week, the invaders have been losing about 1,700 people killed and wounded every day, and in total this year, this figure is already 427,000.
As the full-scale invasion approaches its third anniversary, anticipation is building over whether a peace agreement or an end to hostilities is in sight. In his New Year’s address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the United States would stand with Kyiv and that incoming U.S. President Donald Trump would be “capable of achieving peace and ending Putin’s aggression.” However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently rejected proposals floated by Trump’s allies to end the war.
