Rural towns push to divorce from big cities, form new conservative state

In a bid to break free from what they see as a burden of bureaucracy and socialism, two rural towns in Illinois have taken the drastic step of seeking to secede from the state and form a new, more conservative entity.

The towns of Hillsboro and Meredos, both located in Montgomery County in central Illinois, have initiated a campaign to create a new state, dubbed “Greater Shelby” that will cater to their rural values and way of life.

The impetus for the movement reportedly stems from the growing frustration faced by residents of the towns with the pace of life in larger cities, particularly Springfield, the state capital. Citing high taxes, government overreach, and a perception that their values are being eroded by urban dwelling, the two towns have joined forces to take action.

The plan, backed by local business leaders and residents, is to create a new state with a more business-friendly environment, less stringent regulations, and a more conservative political bent.

According to supporters, the new state would allow them to control their own destiny, implement policies that cater to their needs and values, and escape the reach of state and federal authorities.

Supporters also argue that secession from the state would grant them greater autonomy and allow them to tailor their local economy, education system, and law enforcement to better serve the community.

However, not everyone is in favor of the idea. Critics argue that secession would lead to greater isolationism, reduced resources, and a strain on existing infrastructure, citing the potential loss of government services and funding.

Local authorities have yet to receive an official response to their proposal, though The State of Illinois has stated that it is exploring the possibility of a new state, albeit through alternative means of creation such as the current constitutional process.

Despite the uncertainty around their bid, the towns have been advised to explore other methods of self-governance, including incorporation as a city or town, through the process of becoming a charter government.

It remains to be seen whether the towns’ efforts to create a new state will materialize or be placed on hold pending further evaluation of other possibilities.
