Injury-Plagued 49ers Running Back Situation Takes Another Hit
The San Francisco 49ers’ already injury-riddled season took another turn for the worse after Week 13, when they lost not one, but two running backs. Christian McCaffrey, who was having an abbreviated campaign, will miss the remainder of the regular season due to a PCL injury. His backup, Jordan Mason, is also likely out for the season after landing on injured reserve with an ankle injury.
With the team’s top two running backs sidelined, rookie Isaac Guerendo is next in line to take over. Despite seeing limited action this season, Guerendo has averaged 5.9 yards per rush and scored two touchdowns, including one in the team’s most recent loss. However, he is still a relatively inexperienced starter.
Coach Kyle Shanahan has backed Guerendo, stating that he is “ready to go” and has shown improvement throughout the season. Despite the challenges ahead, the 49ers (5-7) have no choice but to rely on Guerendo as their new starting running back.
