Republicans slam Biden’s ‘No one is above the law’ comment after Hunter’s pardon

On the heels of President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter Biden, several Republican lawmakers have criticized the move, highlighting a tweet from earlier this year where the president said, “No one is above the law.”

Reps. Tom Emmer and Eli Crane shared the tweet and added, “Unless your last name is Biden.” Sen. Ted Cruz tweeted, “This aged like fine milk.”

President Joe Biden and those who support his move argue that he has consistently maintained that he would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and that his son has been unfairly and selectively prosecuted.

However, lawmakers such as Rep. Steve Scalise disagree, labeling the move as “disgraceful” and part of a long history of the Biden family playing by different rules than everyone else.

In his statement on the pardon, President Biden emphasized his commitment to upholding the law and his role in maintaining the independence of the Department of Justice. The “Full and Unconditional Pardon” covers offenses against the United States committed by Hunter Biden from January 1, 2014, to December 1, 2024.

Former President Donald Trump also spoke out on the matter, wondering aloud if the pardon extended to the “J-6 Hostages,” who have been imprisoned for years, and labeling the situation as “such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice.”
