U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz, R-Ind., is demanding “assurances” that Rep. Mike Johnson, the current House Speaker, won’t “sell out to the swamp” and abandon the presidency’s agenda. Spartz’s comments come after Trump endorsed Johnson to remain in the role.
Spartz argued that the United States needs a speaker with “courage, vision, and a plan” to drain the swamp, adding that a public commitment is necessary to delivering President Trump’s agenda. She also criticized Congress’s profligate spending and lack of a plan to accomplish Trump’s agenda.
In a statement, Spartz stated that Congress has abandoned its constitutional duty to oversee the spending of taxpayer money and that a new speaker must show courageous leadership to get the country back on track.
Trump, who endorsed Johnson, described him as “a good, hard-working, religious man” and stated that he will do the right thing. Johnson thanked Trump, expressing his commitment to delivering on the America First agenda.
However, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who has stated he will not vote for Johnson, maintained his position, citing Johnson’s partnership with Democrats, authorization of spying on Americans, and support for sending money to Ukraine as evidence of his lack of commitment to Trump’s agenda.
