The Recent Struggles of Sam Darnold

The past two weeks have seen a decline in Sam Darnold’s game, following a strong 17-week stretch where he threw 35 touchdowns. His passer rating has dropped to a 66.4 from 106.4 during that initial period. Despite the downturn, head coach Kevin O’Connell remains supportive of Darnold’s development, comparing him to other great quarterbacks who had learning moments throughout their careers.

However, the question of Darnold’s future with the Minnesota Vikings remains uncertain. With a pending free agency decision looming, his stock has taken a hit. Darnold is focused on self-reflection and spending time with his teammates, but the offseason will ultimately determine his fate.

The Vikings find themselves in a predicament, with three first-round quarterbacks on their roster, including Darnold, Daniel Jones, and J.J. McCarthy, who is currently recovering from knee surgery. With no clear plan for the 2025 season Week 1 starting quarterback, the team’s future is just as uncertain as Darnold’s.

Despite his impressive 14-win season, Darnold’s recent struggles have cast doubt on his ability to lead the team. The offseason will be crucial in determining the next steps for Darnold and the Vikings.
