Las Vegas Raiders Name John Spytek as New General Manager
The Las Vegas Raiders have made their first major hire of the offseason, reportedly naming John Spytek as their new general manager. Spytek, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ assistant general manager, will take over for Tom Telesco, who lasted just one season in the same role with the Raiders.
Spytek has a extensive track record in NFL front offices, dating back to his internship with the Detroit Lions in 2004. He has worked as a scout for the Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, and Denver Broncos, and as director of player personnel and vice president of player personnel for the Buccaneers. Under his guidance, the Buccaneers won the Super Bowl in the 2021 season.
Spytek’s connection to the Raiders runs deep, as he has a personal connection with Tom Brady, who is a minority owner of the team. The two worked together at the University of Michigan, where Spytek played a role in the Buccaneers’ acquisition of Brady.
As general manager, Spytek will oversee the Raiders’ front office and play a key role in shaping the team’s roster. His first task will be to hire a new head coach, after the team parted ways with Antonio Pierce. Following that, Spytek will work to build a roster in desperate need of a franchise quarterback and more playmakers on both sides of the ball.
The Raiders own the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and some have speculated that the team may trade up to get a quarterback like Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward. With Spytek at the helm, the Raiders will be looking to turn things around after a disappointing season.
