A Homicide Investigation Underway at Maryland Prison After Inmate Found Dead in Cell

A homicide investigation is underway at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland, after an inmate was found dead in his cell on Monday. Robert Warren, 28, was declared deceased by emergency medical service personnel.

According to Maryland State Police, a suspect, also an inmate, has been identified but has not been charged and will not be named until charges are placed. Autopsy results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Warren’s death as a homicide.

The incident comes weeks after a prisoner reportedly stabbed two correctional officers at the same facility on November 8. The two officers sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Additional responding staff members were also evaluated for minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and evidence will be presented to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review upon completion. The North Branch Correctional Institution is a maximum-security facility in Allegany County.
