President Biden Addresses Nation on Jimmy Carter’s Death, Commends Late Statesman and Takes Swipe at Trump
President Joe Biden addressed the nation on Sunday in the wake of former President Jimmy Carter’s passing, at the age of 100, after nearly two years in hospice care. Biden, who had known Carter for over 50 years, described him as a “model of what it means to live a life of meaning and purpose, a life of principle, faith, and humility.”
During his remarks, Biden touted Carter’s character, honesty, and faith, claiming that many look at him as a man of a bygone era. However, Biden disagreed, stating that Carter’s values are still relevant today. He even took a swipe at the current president-elect, saying, “Decency, decency, decency. … Can you imagine Jimmy Carter walking by someone who needed something and just keep walking? Can you imagine Jimmy Carter referring to someone by the way they look or the way they talk?”
The president also shared a fond memory of Carter, who had asked him for help with his presidential campaign in the 1970s. Biden praised Carter’s character, saying that he values honesty, decency, and the way he communicates with people.
In a separate statement, former President Donald Trump issued his own tribute to Carter, stating that while he and Carter “strongly” disagreed on many issues, he recognized Carter’s love and respect for the United States. Trump praised Carter’s efforts to improve the lives of Americans, saying, “He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that, I give him my highest respect.”
