The Liberation of Auschwitz: January 27, 1945

On January 27, 1945, the Soviet Army liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland. When the Soviet forces arrived, they found around 7,000 prisoners left behind, far too weak and sick to continue the march as Nazi officers had forced nearly 60,000 prisoners to escape westward earlier.
