The Long Rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Comes to an End

The long rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has come to an end after rebels swept into the capital Damascus. The fighters declared the city “liberated” in a statement carried on state television, as Syrians celebrated in the streets.

According to Russia, one of Assad’s main allies, he has left Syria and given instructions “to transfer power peacefully.” However, his exact whereabouts remain unknown. The removal of Assad marks the end of more than 50 years of his family’s autocratic rule over the nation of about 23 million, which has been fractured by more than a decade of civil war.
