THE FUNERAL FOR JIMMY CARTER: TIMELINE OF EVENTS
On Saturday, official services for the late President Jimmy Carter began with a motorcade traveling through Plains, Georgia, where he lay in repose at his boyhood home and then stopped at the Georgia State Capitol. Over the next three days, his body will lay in repose at the Carter Center in Atlanta until Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday, Carter will be taken to Washington, DC, where he will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda until his funeral service at Washington National Cathedral later in the week. The United States Capitol building will be open to the public to allow residents to pay their respects to the late president before his funeral.
As a testament to his contributions to the country, President Joe Biden has declared Thursday as a National Day of Mourning in Carter’s honor. Biden, along with president-elect Donald Trump, is set to attend Carter’s funeral to deliver a eulogy in tribute to his legacy.
On Friday, after his funeral at the Washington National Cathedral, President Carter will return to Plains to be laid to rest at his wife, Rosalynn, was buried the year prior, ending his lifelong dedication to serving his country through both his official presidential duties and private endeavors in peace and prosperity.
