Philadelphia cheesesteak is America’s favorite food.

Retired NFL Player Jason Kelce Swears by Tony Luke’s Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia

Philadelphia Eagles seven-time Pro Bowl player Jason Kelce recently shared his favorite cheesesteak spot in the city, crediting Tony Luke’s as the first place he ever had a cheesesteak due to its proximity to Lincoln Financial Field. Kelce joined a football podcast to reminisce about his favorite city spot, naming current Philadelphia hotspots Dalessandro’s and Angelo’s as well.

Tony Luke’s has been operating a stand inside the stadium since its opening in 2003, offering fans a delicious cheesesteak experience while watching the Eagles play. The restaurant has been recognized by Philadelphia Magazine as having the “best cheesesteaks” in the city.

Tony Luke Jr., the founder of Tony Luke’s, shared the story of how his restaurant came to be. Initially, it was an Italian specialty spot, but after six months, Luke decided to offer cheesesteaks, and word of mouth helped popularize the restaurant. Unconventional commercials featuring his father and brother also sparked interest.

The Eagles, like the cheesesteak, are deeply ingrained in Philadelphia culture. Interestingly, Tony Luke Jr., a lifelong Eagles fan, has a new franchise with a different name, born from a franchising rights dispute with his father and brother.

Luke emphasized the importance of using rib-eye meat for a true cheesesteak, citing it as the fattiest and most flavorful option. Cheesesteaks, without peppers, onions, and with melted cheese throughout, are the authentic way.
