PETA slams Norfolk State hiring Michael Vick as ‘charm and charisma hide a sadistic criminal.’

Michael Vick’s Potential Hiring by Norfolk State University Sparks Controversy from PETA

Michael Vick, a former NFL quarterback, is reportedly being considered for the head football coach position at Norfolk State University. While the university has not confirmed the hiring, the move has sparked controversy from the animal rights group PETA.

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk expressed her concerns about Vick’s past, recalling her 2007 meeting with him at PETA’s office in Norfolk, Virginia, during his sentencing for dog fighting. Newkirk described Vick as a “charming, charismatic, psychopath” who attempted to deceive her about the treatment of his dogs. Despite this, Newkirk stated that PETA is focusing on working with law enforcement to bust individuals who still engage in dog fighting.

Vick’s dog fighting scandal came to light in 2007 when his father reported staging dogfights in the family’s garage and keeping injured dogs in the backyard. The investigation led to Vick’s indictment for running an unlawful interstate dog fighting venture, and he eventually pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges. Vick spent 21 months in federal prison, which had a significant impact on his NFL career and reputation.

PETA was vocal in its opposition to Vick during his 2007 indictment, and even hosted him for a course on developing empathy for animals. However, the organization expressed skepticism about Vick’s intentions, stating that he had done little to make amends for his crimes.

Vick has made attempts to rehabilitate his image, including speaking about his mistakes and advocating for second chances. He eventually returned to the NFL in 2009 and played until 2015.

Norfolk State University has not commented on the reports of Vick’s potential hiring, and it remains unclear whether he will be chosen for the position. The controversy surrounding Vick’s potential hiring highlights the ongoing discussion about the intersection of athletes’ personal lives and professional careers.
