Flight En Route to Washington, D.C. Celebrates Trump’s Inauguration with “Y.M.C.A.”
A Southwest Airlines flight from Houston to Washington, D.C. became a festive atmosphere as passengers celebrated the inauguration of President Donald Trump by playing the song “Y.M.C.A.” over the intercom.
Sarah Rogers, a resident of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, shared a video of the experience on TikTok, which has garnered over 2 million views. Rogers had won tickets to the inauguration from her husband as a Christmas present.
As the plane hit the tarmac in D.C., the crew played “Y.M.C.A.” and the cabin lights switched to red and blue. Passengers joined in, performing the iconic choreography associated with the 1978 disco number.
Not all passengers on the flight were heading to the inauguration, but everyone remained respectful and let everyone “have their moment.” Rogers described the experience as “a fun vibe” and said that everyone on the plane felt “really hopeful” and “united” in the moment.
The Village People’s song has become associated with President Trump’s campaign, and the crew’s decision to play it added to the celebratory atmosphere. Many TikTok users reacted to Rogers’ video, praising the crew’s decision and the passengers’ enthusiasm.
Rogers’ experience was not limited to the flight. She stood in line for five hours in the freezing cold before entering the Capital One Arena to watch the inauguration ceremony. The “Y.M.C.A.” has continued to follow her throughout the city, with people playing the song on speakers and doing the “Trump dance” in the streets of D.C.
