OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Agent ‘Operator’ to Automate Daily Tasks
OpenAI has introduced a new feature called Operator, a chatbot that can automate a range of daily tasks, such as planning vacations, filling out forms, making restaurant reservations, and ordering groceries. Developed by OpenAI, Operator is an “agent that can go to the web to perform tasks for you,” allowing users to give it a task and have it execute it independently.
Operator can also ask follow-up questions to further personalize the tasks it completes, such as login information for other websites. Users can take control of the screen at any time. The feature is currently only available to ChatGPT Pro users in the US and can be accessed at Operator.ChatGPT.com.
OpenAI plans to expand the feature to Plus, Team, and Enterprise users and integrate it into ChatGPT. While the company says it may struggle with some tasks, such as managing calendars and creating slideshows, it also provides users with the option to opt out of data collection and delete their browsing data with one click.
Operator directly competes with a feature introduced by Amazon-backed AI startup Anthropic, which allows its agents to use computers like humans to complete complex tasks. The company is poised to emerge as a major player in the generative AI market, which is predicted to top $1 trillion in revenue within a decade.
The company is pushing toward a potential future of artificial general intelligence, which is a vaguely defined benchmark referring to AI that equals or surpasses human intellect on a wide range of tasks. While the timeline for achieving this milestone is uncertain, some experts predict it could take just two to four years to reach.
