OpenAI introduces new ‘o3’ reasoning AI models for testing purposes.

OpenAI Tests New Reasoning AI Models, O3 and O3 Mini, in Bid to Outdo Rivals

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) startup, is testing new reasoning AI models, o3 and o3 mini, in a move that signals growing competition with rivals such as Google to create smarter models capable of tackling complex problems.

The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced that the o3 mini model will be launched by the end of January, with the full o3 model to follow. The new models are designed to be more powerful than OpenAI’s previous o1 models, which were launched in September and are capable of reasoning through complex tasks and solving more challenging problems in science, coding, and math.

The new o3 and o3 mini models are currently in internal safety testing and will be made available to external researchers for testing ahead of their public release. The application process for external researchers to test the o3 models will close on January 10.

The development of the o3 and o3 mini models follows OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, which triggered an AI arms race and led to the company closing a $6.6 billion funding round in October. Google, another major player in the AI market, has also recently launched its second-generation AI model, Gemini, as it aims to regain its lead in the AI technology race.
