OnionGPT, an uncensored AI chatbot, goes live on the dark web.

An Anonymous Developer Launched a Dark Web AI Chatbot to Provide “Uncensored” Access to Information

On December 18, an anonymous developer, known by the pseudonym “root”, launched an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot on the dark web. Dubbed OnionGPT, the service is designed to provide “uncensored” access to information, with the goal of being accessible freely, without restrictions.

Driven by a “give me freedom or give me death” philosophy, root aimed to create a chatbot that would not be bound by the restrictions imposed by mainstream AI services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The service is hosted on a Tor onion service, allowing users to access it anonymously.

OnionGPT uses a language model called DarkIdol-Llama-3.1-13.3B-Instruct-1.2-Uncensored, built on self-owned hardware, including a Mac Mini M4 Pro. The service is less complex than mainstream AI chatbots, offering only text output and no image creation. It also has a strict prohibition on generating responses related to minors, which was added after launch to prevent exploitation.

Despite being hosted on the dark web, OnionGPT has already gained over 5,000 responses per day and has received over 500,000 visitors. AI expert Dr. Felix M. Simon from the Oxford Internet Institute notes that while an unrestricted chatbot may not be great news, its presence on the dark web will likely limit its use due to the inconvenience of accessing it through a Tor browser.

Root emphasizes that OnionGPT is “uncensored to the best of my abilities” but is willing to comply with law enforcement if necessary. However, Dr. Simon suggests that the focus should be on restricting access to the right material and equipment rather than just information.
