Oleksandr Usyk Defeats Tyson Fury in Highly Anticipated Rematch
In a highly anticipated rematch, Oleksandr Usyk emerged victorious over Tyson Fury in their fight for the unified heavyweight world titles in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Usyk defended his titles with a unanimous decision victory, with all three judges scoring the fight 116-112 in his favor.
Fury, who was criticized for his approach in their first fight, looked much improved in the rematch, using his height advantage to keep Usyk at bay. However, Usyk’s speed and agility allowed him to assert control in the later rounds, ultimately securing the win.
According to CompuBox, Usyk landed 179 of 423 punches thrown (42%), while Fury landed 144 of 509 punches thrown (28%). Fury’s trainer, Frank Warren, was left stunned by the decision, calling it “dreadful.”
Fury was overheard telling reporters, “I was quite confident, I fought I won that fight again,” but acknowledged that he would not “cry over spilled milk.” When pressed on whether Usyk was the best boxer he had faced, Fury was defiant in his response, saying he never felt hurt during the fight.
In the aftermath of the bout, Usyk declared he would be taking a break from boxing, saying, “I wanted to rest, turn off my phone, not think about boxing… and just play with my children.”
