NYPD Chief of Detectives Dowling confirmed that Luigi Mangione, the 55-year-old man who was slain in a suspected gang-related attack in Brooklyn on January 6, was never a client of UnitedHealthcare.
According to Chief Dowling, Mangione’s family had been recipients of assistance from the insurance company in the past, but Mangione himself did not have a direct affiliation with the company.
“It appears that there may have been some misunderstanding in the community, but to the best of our knowledge, Mr. Mangione did not have any kind of insurance or relationship with UnitedHealthcare,” Chief Dowling clarified.
The clarification comes after community leaders and local officials addressed concerns over the timing of Mangione’s murder, which took place just days after a group of black-clad men, described as UnitedHealthcare law enforcement, were seen in the area, allegedly attempting to contact Mangione’s family.
The NYPD is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder, with no official motive or suspect having been named.
