Nvidia Unveils New GPU Chips for Laptops and PCs
Nvidia, a company known for its artificial intelligence chips, has unveiled new GPU chips for laptops and PCs that will come pre-installed in devices ranging from $550 to $2,000. The GeForce RTX 50-series chips use the same Blackwell architecture as Nvidia’s fastest AI processors for servers and data centers. The new chips will start shipping in March.
The RTX 50-series chips will support a feature called DLSS 4, which uses AI to boost gaming frame rates. They will also allow for more detailed character faces, better graphics, and higher resolutions. The company claims that technical improvements made for its massive AI business will trickle down into its graphics cards for games.
The new chips come in a range of configurations, with the most powerful, the RTX 5090, selling individually for $1,999. Nvidia says it has 92 billion transistors, compared to 208 billion transistors on the company’s B200 GPU for servers.
The RTX 50-series chips are designed to optimize AI models and computer graphics, not just gaming. They are powerful enough to run large language models and image generation models from companies including Meta, Mistral, and Stability AI. They will also support generative AI in games, allowing game developers to integrate advanced AI features like character animation and physics.
Despite the growth in its gaming business, Nvidia has shifted its focus to AI due to the rapid growth of demand for processing power. The company’s data center sales have more than doubled for six straight quarters, topping $30 billion in the most recent period. Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang believes that the company’s gaming side benefits from its focus on AI.
