The holidays can be a time of joy and celebration, but they can also be a source of stress and anxiety. Between the pressure to buy gifts, plan events, and spend time with family, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and adjunct associate professor at George Washington University, offers advice on how to manage holiday stress and feel your best.

Dr. Wen attributes much of the holiday stress to logistical challenges, including travel, hosting, and balancing work and family responsibilities. She also notes that relational stress can play a significant role, particularly if there are family members with whom you’ve had disagreements or past trauma.

For those feeling especially run-down, Dr. Wen suggests identifying the cause of their fatigue, whether it’s related to sleep, underlying medical conditions, or lifestyle factors. If no clear medical issue is found, she recommends discussing lifestyle changes with a primary care provider.

Symptoms of chronic stress can include headaches, back pain, abdominal cramping, and trouble concentrating. Dr. Wen advises seeking relief from stress if these symptoms occur.

To alleviate stress and feelings of being run-down, Dr. Wen recommends “forest bathing,” exercise, and getting enough sleep. She also suggests incorporating activities and methods that work best for the individual, such as yoga, mindfulness meditation, or spending time with friends and loved ones.

Additionally, Dr. Wen advises people to identify what activities and interactions are causing them the most anxiety and find ways to reduce or mitigate these interactions. She also encourages people to focus on the things they are looking forward to during the holiday season, making a list of positive activities to help maintain a positive attitude.

Ultimately, the key to a successful holiday season is finding ways to manage stress, prioritize self-care, and focus on what brings joy and happiness. By incorporating Dr. Wen’s advice into their routine, individuals can feel their best and enjoy the holiday season.
