Authorities investigating unusual drone activity in northern New Jersey are stressing that there is no threat to public safety despite multiple sightings in recent weeks. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued two flight restrictions, including airspace above President-elect Trump’s Bedminster golf club.
The sightings were first reported on November 18 and have continued throughout the past few weeks. Videos have surfaced showing drones flying over Somerset and Morris counties, including one captured by a Morris County resident on November 25 near Black River Middle School.
The FAA confirmed the flight restrictions on Tuesday, but has issued no updates since then. The agency states that it investigates all reports of unauthorized drone operations and pilots who endanger aircraft or people can have their certification revoked and/or face $75,000 in fines.
Local law enforcement agencies are working together with the FBI and other authorities to investigate the sightings. Officials from Morris and Somerset counties have released a joint statement assuring the public that there is no known threat to public safety and that they will continue to monitor and investigate the drone activity.
The sightings have also sparked concern about potential security breaches, given the proximity to Trump Bedminster. The FAA’s restrictions on flight activity over the golf club are in place until December 10.
In a separate incident, unidentified drones have been seen over British-American joint bases in the United Kingdom. The British military has sent personnel to protect the bases, which house F-15 and F-35 fighter jets, and no incursions have affected the base’s buildings, personnel or assets.
The drone sightings in New Jersey come as President-elect Trump continues to fill his incoming administration. Authorities are urging the public to report any information related to the recent sightings of possible drones.
