Christian McCaffrey’s Season May Be Over Due to Knee Injury
On a snowy night in Buffalo, Christian McCaffrey’s season may be hanging in the balance after he slid to the ground without contact during a run and was later ruled out with a knee injury. The injury, which was diagnosed as a PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) sprain, may end his season, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
McCaffrey, who had been playing in just his fourth game of the season after missing the first eight with Achilles and calf injuries, took a pitch right and slid to the ground. He briefly visited the medical tent before leaving the field and heading to the locker room. The injury marred an otherwise dismal 35-10 loss to the Bills for the San Francisco 49ers.
McCaffrey’s loss would be a massive blow to the 49ers, who have already been plagued by injuries throughout the season. His initial injury, initially described as a calf issue, kept him out of training camp and the preseason. He eventually landed on injured reserve after Week 1, but was activated in a bid to turn around the team’s struggling offense. In his three games back, McCaffrey averaged just 49.7 rushing yards per game, a far cry from his normal production.
Just before the injury, McCaffrey had shown flashes of his former self, gaining 19 yards on one carry, but the PCL sprain may have ended his season. Further evaluation will be necessary to determine the extent of the injury and the possibility of surgery.
