NFL taps veteran referee to lead officiating crew for Super Bowl LIX

The NFL has announced its officiating crew for Super Bowl LIX, set to take place on February 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The crew will be led by veteran referee Ron Torbert, who has previously led a crew in Super Bowl LVI.

Torbert’s team includes side judge Boris Cheek, who has also officiated in a previous Super Bowl. Umpire Mike Morton, who was a player in Super Bowl XXXIV, will make history as the first person to both play and officiate in the Super Bowl.

The rest of the crew includes down judge Max Causey, line judge Mark Stewart, field judge Mearl Robinson, back judge Jonah Monroe, and replay official Kevin Brown. While Morton and Causey are relatively new to officiating, having only been in the role for three years, Torbert has been working in the NFL since 2010, starting as a back judge and becoming a referee in 2014.

According to Pro Football Reference, Torbert has called slightly more than one penalty per game, resulting in an average of 11.40 more yards. The crew will learn which teams they will be officiating for when the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles play on the road to the NFC title game, while the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills will face off in the AFC divisional matchup.
