The Tennessee Titans have the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, and some are speculating that they will choose Colorado star quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Former NFL player Shawne Merriman believes that Sanders is the cream of the crop, but he also acknowledges that the No. 1 pick doesn’t always guarantee getting the desired player.
Merriman, who was part of the infamous Eli Manning-Phillip Rivers trade in 2004, knows that the No. 1 pick doesn’t always mean getting your guy. He suggests that former Giants coach Deion Sanders, Shedeur’s father and head coach, may try to influence the team’s decision.
Deion has said that “multiples idiots… will say things that totally aren’t true regarding where I would like” his sons to play at the next level, but didn’t rule out the possibility of influencing the decision.
Merriman will get another look at Sanders before the draft at the East-West Shrine Bowl, which his production company, Lights Out Sports TV, will live stream the practices of. Merriman has an no brief to cover the event and believes it will be a massive deal for his company.
With the top pick, it’s unclear whether the Titans will take Sanders or Cam Ward, who some sportsbooks have as the favorite. The Cleveland Browns, who own the second pick, are a wild card with Deshaun Watson still rostered, so it’s possible that Sanders could fall to the Giants. Deion’s history with the New York Yankees, where he played professional baseball, also gives the Giants a connection to the Big Apple.
