NFL investigation into sexual assault allegations against Deshaun Watson concludes
The NFL’s investigation into sexual assault allegations against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has concluded, with the league citing a lack of sufficient evidence to support a finding of a violation of the personal conduct policy.
The decision was announced in an email to The Associated Press by NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy, who stated, “The matter is closed. There was insufficient evidence to support a finding of a violation of the personal conduct policy.”
Watson, a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, had been under investigation for several months after a woman accused him of a sexual assault in Texas in September. The accuser was seeking more than $1 million in damages before the two sides reached a confidential settlement.
Despite the lack of evidence, Watson’s future with the Browns remains uncertain, with his massive contract and its salary cap ramifications putting the team in a difficult situation. The Browns would face significant costs if they were to release him, making it possible that they could opt to move on from the disgruntled quarterback.
Watson has played in only 19 games over three seasons with the Browns, due to suspension and injuries. He is ending the season on injured reserve for the second year in a row after suffering an Achilles tendon tear in October.
