American sports agent Leigh Steinberg has launched the Leigh Steinberg Foundation to combat concussions in sports. The foundation aims to educate parents, fund research, and promote awareness and prevention of concussions. Steinberg, who has represented some of the biggest stars in football history, has been passionate about the issue for years.
Steinberg’s inspiration for the foundation came from watching his quarterback clients get repeatedly hit in the head during the late 1980s. He started hosting panels with players to promote awareness for brain health in the 1990s, and an appearance by neuropathologist Bennet Ifeakandu Omalu convinced him of the importance of educating players about the risks of concussions.
The foundation has a doctor’s committee and will raise money to fund research and bring more healing to those affected by concussions. Steinberg will also throw a Super Bowl party in New Orleans, where he will invite several neurologists to educate attendees on concussions.
The foundation comes at a time when concussion awareness is at an all-time high. In recent years, several high-profile players have suffered concussions, including Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Steinberg believes that part of the problem with players is that they are in a state of denial when it comes to their physical health, and that they need to be educated about the long-term consequences of concussions. He has seen players suffer multiple concussions and has encouraged them to consider retiring from the sport.
As the country looks to turn the page on a scary year for brain injuries in football, Steinberg’s foundation aims to make a difference by promoting awareness, prevention, and cures for concussions.
