Rivera Poised to Become First to Interview for Jets Coaching Job, Source Says
Rivera, currently an analyst for NFL Network, is expected to be the first candidate to interview for the vacant head coaching position with the New York Jets. As a free agent, he is not tied to any specific NFL team, allowing him to interview during the regular season. The current rule restricts assistant coaches from interviewing until after the regular season, with the first round of interviews being virtual.
A seasoned coach, Rivera has over 200 games of experience under his belt and has led his teams to five postseason appearances. He was instrumental in guiding the Carolina Panthers to Super Bowl 50, where they ultimately fell to the Denver Broncos.
The Jets are expected to cast a wide net in their search for a new coach, with Rivera serving as the first of many potential candidates. The team has yet to conduct any interviews for the coaching position, which became vacant after the firing of Robert Saleh during the season. Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich has a challenging record, with a 2-9 mark since taking over. The Jets have not had a coach finish their tenure with a winning record since Al Groh’s departure in 2000.
