New York Democrats Urged to Protect New Yorkers: ‘Something Needs to Change’
A growing chorus of New York Democrats is calling for action to address the state’s rising crime rates and senseless violence, with many urging their party leaders to take a stronger stance on public safety.
“We need to do something to protect our communities,” said Assemblyman Michael Reilly, a Staten Island Democrat. “Something needs to change. We can’t just keep talking about it, we need to take action.”
Reilly’s comments come as New York City and the surrounding areas continue to grapple with a surge in violent crime, including a recent string of high-profile shootings and murders. The state’s Democratic leadership has faced criticism for its handling of the issue, with some accusing them of being too soft on crime.
“We’re seeing a crisis of confidence in our ability to keep people safe,” said State Senator Andrew Lanza, a Staten Island Republican. “The public is demanding action, and it’s time for our leaders to step up and deliver.”
Some Democrats are pushing for tougher sentencing laws and increased funding for law enforcement, while others are advocating for community-based programs and social services to address the root causes of crime.
“We need to address the underlying issues that are driving this violence, such as poverty, lack of opportunity, and mental health,” said Assemblywoman Latoya Joyner, a Bronx Democrat. “We can’t just throw more police at the problem, we need to work on building stronger, more resilient communities.”
As the debate continues, many New Yorkers are left wondering what it will take to make their communities safer. One thing is clear: something needs to change.
