Alien: Romulus Sequel Avoids Major Plot Hole of Prometheus Follow-Up

Although the sequel plan for Alien: Romulus may not be imminent, the reboot’s follow-up has already taken a promising approach by avoiding the major issue that derailed director Ridley Scott’s Prometheus follow-up. Despite plot holes, viewers were eager for a sequel to Alien: Covenant, which failed to provide clarity on Prometheus’s loose ends.

Unlike Alien: Covenant, which barely mentioned Elizabeth Shaw and picked up long after Prometheus’s story ended, any sequel to Alien: Romulus will be a direct continuation of Rain and Andy’s story. Director Fede Alvarez confirmed that he and his co-writer Rodo Sayagues have discussed potential sequel plotlines, including what might happen when the survivors arrive on Yvaga and whether the planet is the promised land they imagined.

Alien: Covenant’s main problem was its confusing identity, feeling both like a standalone story and a vague continuation of Prometheus. This resulted in a plot that never felt entirely original and failed to wrap up Prometheus’s loose ends. In contrast, Alien: Romulus’s sequel will not repeat this mistake.

Alvarez also cautioned against rushing the sequel, noting that there was a seven-year wait between the original Alien and its first sequel, Aliens. While it may be some time before viewers see Rain again, it is reassuring to hear Alvarez discuss a direct continuation of Alien: Romulus’s plot.

Overall, the approach to Alien: Romulus’s sequel is a promising step forward for the franchise, avoiding the mistakes of Prometheus’s follow-up and setting the stage for a satisfying and coherent story.
