Not Yet 30 Hours After the Attack, New Orleans Carries On
It’s still reeling from the attack, but New Orleans is already moving forward. Just 24 hours after a gunman killed 14 people and injured dozens on New Year’s Eve, the city is determined to put on a brave face and move on with the festivities. The Superdome is preparing for the Sugar Bowl, and the city is gearing up for the arrival of the Super Bowl in just a few weeks.
But for many residents, the attack has brought back painful memories of past tragedies, including Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill. As one resident put it, “We just roll up our sleeves and keep going.” Others are more skeptical, saying the attack may lead to increased security measures, but it won’t change the city’s spirit.
The attack has also brought out the best in the community, with strangers offering support and solidarity on social media and in person. At a local coffee shop, a barista said, “We want our community and our visitors to continue to enjoy. There’s so much to enjoy about New Orleans, and we are going to make sure that our routes and the Superdome are safe.”
Despite the terror, the city is determined to move forward, inspired by its residents’ resilience and the phrase “let the good times roll.” As one resident put it, “We’ll get through this just like we got through Covid, just like we got through Katrina 20 years ago. We’ll come back.”
