Super Bowl Security Warning: Law Enforcement Concerned About Potential Attacks

Ad

As fans prepare to head to New Orleans for the Super Bowl on February 9, law enforcement agencies are warning that the game and its celebrations are attractive targets for potential attacks, particularly vehicle ramming, following the deadly New Year’s attack in the city. A new security assessment obtained by ABC News reveals that state and federal agencies are concerned about the potential threat of copycat attacks in the wake of the New Orleans attack and recent messaging from foreign terrorist organizations calling for attacks against Western targets.

The assessment highlights the concern over electric vehicles, which were used in both the New Orleans attack and a blast in Las Vegas, as they are quieter, accelerate faster, and are typically much heavier than average combustion engine vehicles. Additionally, a “low-level threat” to the food sector during the Super Bowl is also mentioned, with threat actors maintaining interest in using chemicals and biological agents to poison food and water sources.

With around 100,000 visitors expected in New Orleans for the Super Bowl, law enforcement agencies are taking steps to ensure public safety. A state of emergency is in effect in Louisiana during the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras, and hundreds of police officers and officials will be deployed to secure the area. New barriers and wedges have been installed in the French Quarter, and security checkpoints will be set up at each entry point to look for explosive materials.

The increased security measures will also include prohibitions on coolers and ice chests, as well as searches of bags or containers larger than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches. Another enhanced security zone will be implemented around the Superdome and NFL Experience venues.
