[The Texas man suspected of killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens more in a New Year’s celebration in New Orleans is identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a US citizen from Texas. Jabbar was an Army veteran who worked in real estate and IT and had struggled with financial troubles in recent years.

Jabbar served in the US Army, including as an information technology team chief for the 82nd Airborne Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team. He later worked in business development and data engineering at Deloitte, and obtained a real estate license in 2019.

Court documents show that Jabbar struggled with financial issues, including owing over $27,000 in back payments on his house, which was in danger of foreclosure. He also had credit card debt and his businesses had lost money.

Jabbar’s past includes a 2012 child support case, in which he was ordered to pay amounts that increased over the years, and a 2002 misdemeanor theft conviction.

On the day of the attack, Jabbar rented a Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck on the car rental website Turo, which allows owners to rent their vehicles to others. The truck was listed as costing $105 a day, excluding taxes and fees, and was unavailable to rent until 12:30 p.m. central time on Wednesday.

Jabbar was killed while exchanging fire with police, and potential improvised explosive devices and an ISIS flag were found in the truck.
